Keeping your boots waterproof

Clean, dry and reproof the leather so the membrane can do its job.

Greta Holm · Gear Specialist1 min read · Updated Jul 11, 2026

Cairn Mid boots have a waterproof membrane inside, but the leather outside still needs care so it doesn't soak through and feel wet.

  1. Brush off mud and rinse with lukewarm water.
  2. Dry at room temperature, away from heaters, with the insoles out.
  3. Apply a water-based reproofer to the damp leather every few months.

Laces and eyelets

Rinse grit out of the eyelets after muddy hikes; it wears through laces fast. Replacement laces are free under warranty — just ask.

Can I exchange boots I've already worn outside once?

PipBot10:13 AM
